Hiring a Skip Bin in Castle Hill: Our Local Guide

We have arranged skip bins in Castle Hill since 2016. This guide combines what those bookings show with The Hills Shire Council's own rules, so you can choose the right bin, put it in the right place and avoid extra charges.

What Castle Hill books, and why

Here the 4m³ is booked as often as the 2m³, while across Sydney the 3m³ and 2m³ lead. Loads are heavier too: Mixed Heavy is booked almost as often as general waste. That fits the suburb. Three in five Castle Hill homes have four or more bedrooms (2021 Census), and many are now due for a new kitchen or bathroom, new paving or a garden makeover.

  • Garage clear-out or garden tidy: 2m³ mini skip, 1.8m long, about 10 to 15 bags.
  • Bathroom strip-out: 3m³ as Mixed Heavy. Tiles, render and an old bath weigh far more than they look.
  • Kitchen renovation or a big family clear-out: 4m³, 3m long, the size most Castle Hill driveways take easily.
  • Pavers, retaining walls, soil: a small Soil and Dirt or Mixed Heavy bin. Heavy material reaches the weight limit long before the bin looks full.

Where the bin can go

  • Driveway or front yard: no council approval and no fee (The Hills Shire Council). Up to 4m³, the truck needs about 2.5m of width and 4m of height, so check for low branches, carports and gutters.
  • Nature strip: bins of 8m³ or less in a residential street need no approval for up to 7 days, as long as people can still walk past and it isn't beside a traffic lane on a main road.
  • Road: never. The Hills Shire refuses every application to put a skip on the roadway.

What can't go in, and where it goes instead

  • Asbestos: never in a standard skip. Homes built or renovated before 1990 can contain it. NSW lets a homeowner remove under 10m² of bonded asbestos; more than that needs a licensed removalist.
  • Paint, gas bottles, batteries, oils and fluoro tubes: free at the Community Recycling Centre in North Parramatta, which takes them from non-residents, or at the council's yearly Household Chemical CleanOut at Castle Hill Showground.
  • Mattresses and tyres: these can go in your skip if you add them at checkout for a set fee per item.
  • Trees: pruning more than 10% of a tree or removing one usually needs council consent. Sort that out before you book a bin for the branches.

Only a few bulky items?

Every Hills Shire property gets two free kerbside clean-ups a year, collected 14 to 28 days after you book. They take furniture, whitegoods and bundled branches, but not building materials, soil, concrete, tiles or glass. If your job includes any of those, or you need it gone this week, a skip is the quicker option.

When to book

Spring is Castle Hill's busy season: September, November and October are the top months. Friday is the most requested delivery day, then Thursday. Bins stay about five days here, a day longer than the Sydney norm, and most people book two days ahead. In spring, book earlier to get the day you want.

Permit quick check: bin on your own property, no permit. Bin on the street, footpath or nature strip, The Hills Shire council permit required (council: 02 9843 0555). More detail on our skip bin hire The Hills Shire page.
